Steward Malta

Between 2018 and 2023, Steward Malta managed a public-private partnership concession to operate St Luke’s, Karin Grech, and Gozo General Hospitals. Steward Malta made significant, long-term investments in staff training and development, emergency transport, and medical facilities.

We have improved patient access to our services and professionalised the financial management of the concession for the benefit of the people and the communities served across our operations. Steward Malta

Rapid success in Malta

Steward Health Care International has been fully dedicated to providing quality health care at the Gozo, Karin Grech, and St. Luke’s Hospitals in Malta since taking over the hospitals in 2018. We operated three hospitals for the Maltese government under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, which enabled the delivery of efficient and quality health care services within modern facilities. We are proud to have offered unparalleled services, including a world-class orthotic and prosthetic programme. Our local services in Malta and Gozo included not only leading clinical facilities with full-time staff but also the only on-site fabrication of prosthetic devices in the country, drastically improving the lives of many patients.

Steward Malta

We operated the only acute care hospital on the island of Gozo,

which sees a large surge of tourists each year, making it the go-to facility for one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. We were able to provide a wide range of treatments to meet all our patients’ needs, from urgent care for tourists who have suffered from diving incidents with the use of hyperbaric chambers, to the general care of the local population. Steward Healthcare International also revolutionised the medical transportation between Gozo and mainland Malta, replacing the ferry with an air-ambulance service to transport patients rapidly between the islands to ensure they receive the best possible treatment in moments of urgent need.

Training the next generation of health care professionals

Steward Malta rapidly designed and built the state-of-the-art Barts Medical School in 17 months, from April 2018 to November 2019. This is the first medical school on Gozo, constructed in partnership with Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry – a faculty of QMUL, one of the three largest colleges of the University of London and a member of the prestigious Russell Group.

In July 2022, Steward Malta was proud to have played an important role in the first graduation ceremony at Barts Medical School. Nineteen graduates were celebrated as they conferred their degree in Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The graduates represented 12 countries including the UK, Belgium, Cayman Islands, Uganda, Philippines, Austria, Malta, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Ireland, and Canada. The ceremony took place at the historic Cittadella on Gozo.
